Rep. Truitt Invites High School Applicants for NASA Scholars Program

SOUTHLAKE, TX -- State Representative Vicki Truitt (R-Keller) announced today the launch of this year’s High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS).  HAS will enable selected Texas students to explore and become a part of NASA's plan for space exploration, which will send humans back to the moon, then on to Mars and beyond.  After they employ their math and science skills to complete 10 Web-based assignments during the school year, they will travel to Johnson Space Center in Houston during the summer and use those same skills to help investigate options for sending humans to Mars along side their peers and real NASA scientists and engineers.  "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for young, aspiring students," said Truitt.

Selected juniors will take part in a variety of activities including: interactive web-based work, distance learning, online mentoring, briefings and tours at Johnson Space Center (JSC), and a summer group project. Eligible students are required to meet the following criteria:

·U.S. citizen

·Texas resident

·Currently a high school junior

·Interest in science, math, or engineering

·Able to commit to a relationship with JSC, including a one-week residential experience during the summer

·Access to the Internet and E-mail (home, school, or public library)

Students eligible for the scholarship include those residing in Grapevine, Colleyville, Keller, Westlake, Southlake, and the northern area of Fort Worth east of IH-35W (Park Glen, Summerfields and north).  "What an opportunity for our young people! Former scholarship recipients have told me this was a life-changing experience that inspired them to shoot for the stars - literally and figuratively," Truitt stated, "We're eager to award this scholarship to an interested student."

The State of Texas, in partnership with JSC and the Texas educational community developed High School Aerospace Scholars in 1999 to encourage more students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Additional partners include the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, University of Houston System, and Rotary NASA.  More than 1,750 students from across Texas have participated in the program.
