• Presented the "Friend of Medicine" award by the Texas Medical Association for showing dedication and steady leadership on behalf of Texas’ patients and physicians, December 2011
• Named "Legislator of the Year" by Goodwill Industries for passing legislation for the reasonable regulation of payday and title loan businesses, November 2011
• “Fighter of Free Enterprise Award” by Texas Association of Business, November 2011
• Awarded the "Peacemaker Award" by the Travis County Dispute Center Resolution for work on "payday/auto title loan" legislation during 82nd Legislature, November 2011
• Honored by The Alliance of Texas Down Syndrome Associations for work during the 82nd Legislature supporting people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, October 2011

One newspaper described her as “having a calm demeanor, yet bulldog determination.” In fact, during her first term in office, her House colleagues gave her the nickname, “Bulldog,” but she says that her determination and tenacity are focused to serve those to whom she owes her allegiance — the people of the 98th Texas House District.
